As a former Christian (Southern Baptist), they believe hell is to show God's glory as Judge, while Heaven glorifies him in his Mercy.
That's one thing that always made me feel horrible. I used to have nightmares about my family dying, and knowing where they were. But now, I realize, my time with them here is even more important than trying to "save" them. It's all the time I have. And my life has been the better because of it. I love them so much more in my atheism.
As for your mom, I've seen this a lot while I worked at a Church. The Church isn't going to give her a way to be at peace with it. They will tell her to pray and continue witnessing. As long as she is a Christian, she will be affected this way.
Christianity has it's positives, but it believes some horrible things. It's why I'm an anti-theist.
