To summarize in a few words:
The energy within the universe is the same energy that has been around since it "began" (if it indeed did begin). However... nihilism, thus existentialism. As we continue define (or modify our definitions) for "things"... it becomes clear that we define new things quite often. Hence, plenty of things can be new... but the energy that "makes them up" almost certainly is not.
