In a world with no room left for God

I don't know what rationalizations they would use, but I believe the impetus behind faith would remain what it's always been: a deep-rooted need for meaning. Of course, we all have such a need in our lives, but religious believers tend to be so self-absorbed and vain as to believe that the world is but a stage upon which they -- faithful protagonists -- are central players in a cosmic drama of surpassing importance. No scientific explanation, however comprehensive it may be, will satisfy certain people, especially if it underscores the provisional nature of our existence -- our smallness and insignificance. In the end, there will always be people whose response to this is, "But what about me?"
