He was persecuted, along with many others as a result of governmental control of social practices. They did not have freedom of religion, and he did things that were against the law, which had obvious consequences. This is the same formula that all totalitarian dictators use to gain control of their people.
You ever wonder why Norway and Sweden aren't the most oppressive countries, despite having among the highest percentage of atheists? It's because atheism has NO INTERNAL DOGMA and does not presuppose persecution or oppression.
Religion, however, DOES have an internal dogma, and, often times, does presuppose persecution and oppression. This is a direct result of religious doctrine. You ever wonder how much free thought you can have in a theocracy?
