Had Jesus just died and that was that and nothing else happened afterwards then his followers would have melted away, it not like Jesus had started much of a movement within his own life time. Atheists are keen to point out that nothing contemporary was written about him at all. Its what happened after that point that people undoubtedly experienced that set the movement going. You can question what it was exactly that people experienced but that's where it really got started not a mythologized death, it was a fairly humiliating death standard for any typical criminal of the time.
