Matt Dillahaunty from Atheist experience was a pastor too, and studied to become a minister after he read a passage in the bible that says you should be able to back up your beliefs. I forget the verse he quoted, but it led to him becoming an atheist.
Some people have said that the best path to atheism is sometimes a honest reading of the bible. Looking up the history of the bible and other religions doesn't hurt either. Nobody will ever tell you in sunday school that Mithras from hinduism had an almost identical life to Jesus.
