Similar to Napolean I would recommend Carl Sagan and Stephen Jay Gould.
Accessible philosophy would include Epicurus, Emerson, Montaigne, Marcus Aurelius, Schopenhauer, Hume and Russell.
I also like the writings of Jefferson and Lincoln. Gibbon is also a pleasure to read.
