Faith is always necessary but it can be built on faith in other premises that point towards God. For example if you reflect on greatness and morality and you deem it to need an eternal objective source as it's basis, then this premise may lead you to faith in God but you would also need faith in those premises along side with the faith in morality and greatness. Also, if you know a certain thing needs to have been designed by a cosmic designer, this would lead you to conclude in a cosmic designer. While that doesn't prove it's worthy of worship, perhaps reflection over the nature of life would make you believe that the Creator has attributes making it worthy of worship.
