Conservatives are concerned about the deficit, but they are are also concerned about paying taxes. They want welfare for corporations, but not for people who would starve without it. They understand that tax revenue is necessary for a government to function, but the rich shouldn't have to contribute anything to that. They hate the idea of the government paying for anything, unless it's prisons, military, law enforcement or religion. They hate the idea of workers being paid a living wage as much as they hate the idea of workers getting assistance from the government. They believe that everybody has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as long as they can afford to game the system such that they can enjoy these things. If they can't, obviously they deserve to die.
Basically, the conservative message is that if only we let most of the poor die, enslave the rest, and tax the shit out of everybody making under six figures, we could balance that deficit lickety-split. One nation, under sociopathic plutocracy.
