In my opinion many parents have nothing but the best intentions raising their children in a particular religion; since they are telling their children what they consider to be the truth.
Is this process indoctrination? In the strict sense of the term yes, however is this emotional abuse? No.
However I do believe the education system can play an extremely important role to eliminating the cancers of religion and superstition. Children from as early as possible in my opinion need to be taught things like the scientific method and critical thinking. Also they need comprehensive, impartial and comparative education concerning different religions.
I believe as long as children get this type of education, many will reject the religion their parents raised them in and most will end up being atheists. Because they will have the "tools" to determine that the
claims of these religions are rubbish.
