When I was still using drugs, I experienced hallucinations that were almost indistinguishable from 'real' experiences on a couple of occasions. I have also had many dreams that were extremely realistic.
I strongly suspect that a lot of religious experiences are actually the results of a kind of benign psychosis. A psychiatrist once told me that psychosis can be similar to dreaming while being awake.
If the prophet Muhammed did exist, I suspect that he had some kind of psychotic break. I base this on my reading of 'Muhammed' by Karen Armstrong -- an exellent book that I really recommend.
