I don't care if "God" is your pilot or your co-pilot - I'm still not getting on your 'plane.

The analogy still works even if we take the platitudinous pseudo-deepity meaning. If you're going to surrender your life and your actions to some figment of the imagination that someone has sold you under the brandname "God" or "Jesus", I want to keep as far away from you as it's physically possible to get.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
