After relentless pressure from the families of shooting victims, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill, the first of its kind in the nation, requiring deaths in police custody to be investigated by outside organizations.

"We researched the state of Wisconsin and we could not find an 'unjustified' ruling of a police-involved shooting in 129 years since the police and fire departments were first formed in 1885, and we knew that was an impossible record of perfection."

But some police unions are already objecting to the new law, saying police departments are "uniquely suited to investigate incidents." They worry that, in addition to outside agencies' investigations, federal authorities might investigate deaths in police custody, and lawsuits could be brought.

Yes, of course the watchdogs want to continue watching the watchdogs. They have such a glorious record of cleaning up the messes.

Every state needs a law like this. Maybe the fucking cops will get less trigger-happy if they know that it won't be their buddies in blue covering up their crimes.
