Unless... gasp! ... there's another option..?
Since (nominally) she is my queen as well, I'd much rather see the institution made as redundant as it is already powerless. Our Government can operate quite happily without it and nobody outside of a fossilised industry with a vested interest and brown nose would even notice. The trains would continue to run, the bins would still be emptied, the world would still spin. We'd have more newspaper space for ever more banal chav TV non-stories, but apart from that...
Never mind, though. Keep up the binary thinking.
You only validate my previous words. She is not there to run the country, she is there to represent the country and the British nation.
We removed our monarchs, the Ottoman Dynasty from power because we did not want them to be the representatives of our nation anymore. We stated that we wanted a nation state based on the people who founded the country, and ousted the monarchs, declaring them persona non grata.
But that happened with a revolution, not with some peaceful talks about whether we should abolish monarchy or not, Atatürk came and said:
"Sovereignity and kingship are not given to anyone via talks or debates. Sovereignity and kingship are taken with power, force and valor. The Ottomans also have been the owners of the sovereignity of the Turkish nation via force. They have been in office for 600 years. Now, the Turkish nation is returning the favor to those who ravaged, by taking sovereignity and kingship in his own hand. This is an instantenous process.
The real subject is not whether we are going to give our nation the right to rule.
This is nothing more than the pronounciation of an established fact. It would be appropriate if everyone that is here and in the parliament see the subject in this way, but else, these facts will again be retold in the appropriate manner. But maybe some heads will be cut off in the process."
While saying the last sentence, he made a gesture with his hand, a hard sweep from left to right, as though his hand cut through an invisible neck, and everyone agreed.
If you seek to abolish the monarchy, you will need to try harder than that.
