I don't believe in the Genesis story but I still find it interesting. I'm going to use the King James Bible because it's my favourite version and it says the same as other translations for this.
The tree wasn't just knowledge.
The serpent finds Eve.
Knowledge and wisdom are two different things. After all, humans can have a lot of knowledge but they don't always use that knowledge wisely.
The first thing Adam and Eve did with the knowledge of good and evil was decide that nakedness was shameful and make aprons to cover the naughty bits. Yes, they invented sexual hangups even though God had told them to be fruitful and multiply and hadn't given them clothes.
When God turned up he gave them a chance to explain why they disobeyed but, instead of taking responsibility for their own actions, Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent. So, for all their knowledge of good and evil they didn't have the wisdom to figure out that putting the blame on someone else is wrong.
So what happens if we take God out of it and just go with evolution?
Humans evolved big brains and the ability to judge things as good or evil but our species has an awful tendency to think on the lines of "My group good, other group bad so kill other group". We have a lot of knowledge but the way we've wrecked the planet proves that we haven't always been wise when it comes to applying our knowledge. And how often do humans blame other humans for their own actions?
So where did Eve end up? The same place as Adam. They're in the 21st century wondering if we're going to survive climate change and all the pollution.
The tree wasn't just knowledge.
Quote:9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
The serpent finds Eve.
Quote:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Quote:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
