His touch and desire for a fresh fig should have been more than sufficient to have resulted in the mutha of all fig trees.
The fig tree is a metaphor for the Jews, who didn't believe in Jesus. So he effectively renounced (killed) them because they didn't get the new program he was selling. The story is in line with the one about shaking the dust off of one's sandals if the local yokels aren't receptive.
