That would amount to around $8,500 per worker, and it was profit that exists only because of the efforts of these workers. High-paid executives can't do everything. A huge chunk of that reported profit belonged to the workers, but they were only given little more than the bare minimum the company could get away with.
The company can absolutely afford to pay workers a living wage. They don't want to.
I literally hate Wal*Mart. I don't like that company in any shape or form. I used to work for Wal*Mart at one of their Distribution Centers. The pay and the benefits in their DCs are a lot better than they are at the stores. Our health and dental coverage was very good and we had profit sharing averaging around $300-$400 quarterly. When I worked there employees were getting .50 per hr pay increases every three months until our salaries topped out. The pay and benefits weren't shabby at all. Aside from all that I have my issues with Wal*mart.
On the otherhand, at least for the Wal*Mart stores in this country, pay and work requirements are explained to potential employees in the interview process. No one's twisting their arms or forcing employees to stay there. If they don't like the job, start looking for something else...either that, or, employees have a right to organize.
