Ohh okay then let me put it in other words. Two apes who have been mating for several weeks (or months, I don't know exactly how much time it needs or if it changes the results but nevertheless they being doing it before). And in all these time they never bug-picked each other. And if they start doing it now does she (I assume that it's the male is the one who claims and pursues the activity) gonna be mating now because she thinks she owes him something or just because they want to? And what if they bug-picked each other but they never mate at all?
As far as chimps go, the bug-picking is a behavior that's constantly going on. The females have many males competing for them, so bug-picking helps males with their standing. There are other ways that they compete, too, like fighting each other and protecting the women and their young.
