Exactly so. It was the production of oxygen that led to the first atmospheric pollution event, as the metabolised free oxygen became more dominant in the atmosphere. It was this which gave rise to the so-called Cambrian Explosion; oxygen is like rocket fuel for life and allowed for multicellular organisms to evolve.
