Yeah with my strict catholic family I always feel so awkward when they say grace before a meal. More than once I've started eating or came close to it before they said it. I just sit there silently staring into space while they thank their "lord" for being able to eat this day (which of course it's at his whim whether they are allowed to eat, not their work to pay for the food or the people who worked hard to create the food, no). Nobody in family has noticed yet I don't say grace or bless the food, I hope to keep it that way (my extended family is really religious I don't need a 5 hour sermon). Thankfully they haven't yet asked me to do it, I don't know what I'd do in that situation to be honest. The only thing I could think to help the op would be to suggest someone else says grace.
