Exactly. In a race to get to the Moon, with massive amounts of prestige on the line, with radars tracking their own probes -- and thus capable of tracking our craft; with the humiliation of its biggest world rival being the fallout from exposing the conspiracy -- all that, and the Soviets decide instead to go along with it?
That doesn't fit any model of Russian or Soviet statecraft I've ever looked at through their history.
Not to mention all the physical evidence of our landings.
Some conspiracy theories may well be true, but this isn't one of them. The richest irony to me is that lunar hoaxers tend to be right-wing nutjobs who regard the government as absolutely incompetent, yet they believe it to be deft enough to pull off a cover-up on this scale. Cognitive dissonance, indeed.
