I took the covers off my head - yes I sleep with the covers over my head - and saw what only I could label as a spectral figure. I was immobile, unable to move due to the immense fear that had overcome my mind and body.

Immobile, eh? That may have been sleep paralysis, sometimes accompanied by terrifying hallucinations.

Also, it may have been possible that you were dreaming later on in the story, and you mistakenly thought you were awake and out of bed. But I'm just speculating.
