As a student of psychology, I can easily see the comparison.
Eg: You're real father was a uncaring and violent person and mum remarried and your step father was nice, caring and professional man, who will you feel more comfortable with. Your step father puts nice thoughts in your head, explains why things happen and you feel all nice and fuzzy.
After an extended period, as you grow older, you condition yourself that your new father "is" your real father.
Nature is your biological "first" father who has nothing to offer you.
Religion is your step dad.
Once you've invested, it's hard to justify change when you're happy with who you are.
Why would you want to go back and reintroduce yourself and try to understand someone who hurt you.
There's no logical reason to. But for those who do, you may unravel the mystery and suddenly you understand why he did what he did. You then stop denying him as your father and just accept him for who he is.
I sound like I'm preaching! Hehe
