There is nothing new, and I know that atheism is not about religion. . . but a simple claim to disbelief in God does not make one non-religious, and what we mean by the word ‘religion’ itself is something scholars have debated for decades.

re·li·gion [ri-lij-uhn]
a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects:
"Lack of belief in God" is not equal to "I don't believe in God".
"Lack of belief in God" means you believe in God.
It is two different issues, and both are contentions, ie. it is a "true" or "false" contentions and requires reason and evidence.
