I agree with the title of the post wholeheartedly. I never had a police officer do anything nice for me or treat me as anything more than a suspect ( ever been handcuffed and forced to sit on the road, in front of a squad car, while your car gets tossed for a broken taillight? Guns drawn for a bong that happened to be in a box of shit in the backseat when you were moving? Pulled over for speeding from the front? ) HOWEVER, one only has to do a quick scroll through Google News to see that many people in this country are armed to the teeth and facing long jail terms, violent deaths at the hands of other criminals, hate government, or just want to shoot it out with the fuzz. Wasn't there a crazy shootout in California the other day? Don't forget the North Hollywood Bank Shootout. As for the deployment of SWAT teams mentioned in the Bill Maher clip, I think those are more of an intelligence failure than a systemic one. While I can't stand personal interaction with the police; I understand their need for some more military surplus.
That was a picture of an MRAP in that video clip...big difference there. Do police forces need more light armored vehicles that are designed to protect it's occupants form ieds, mines, and ambushes or more 120mm cannons mounted on tracks? The former just doesn't have the same shock appeal as the latter.
