It was a timeless place where the dead people existed until they were ready to "let go". Christian mentioned in the last scene that "everything that happened, happened" and indicated that everything that happened on the island, was IRL.
It was just the goofy "Sawyer is a cop" and "Jack has a son" world that was purgatory or whatever.
