You are quite right.
No I don't equate FGM on the same scale as circumcision.
I started on the comparatively minor procedure of circumcision then invited readers to consider FGM.
I know that in Australia and USA most men of my age are circumcised and not for religious reasons.
For those who don't know what FGM is its the removal of the clitoris and inner and outer labia. Mostly without anaesthetic or in sterile conditions. It is absolute agony for the child. The wound is then sewn up allowing a small hole often kept open with a piece of stick for urinating and menses.
The stitches are removed after marriage and the hole opened up after for purpose of sexual intercourse and childbearing.
This is ostensibly for purity, modesty, cleanliness.
But the real reason is to control women.
It is a brutal barbaric thing to do to a young girl but ignorance and peer pressure will ensure it continues.
