God didn't tell me anything about where to look. A book did, but I have no reason to assume that the book is accurately speaking for God, and the fact that knocking didn't work only indicates that the book is wrong.

This is called confirming your bias.
If you're looking for God, you'll find God, because that's what you want and/or expect. If you're looking for whatever the truth happens to be, not caring what it is and caring only that it is true, then of course, you're never going to find God.
