I find out that we have a food shortage, I can't drink my favourite drink (but we've got baklava, lots n lots of baklava).
Physical geography varies widely, which has impact on the various regional cultures. For example, in Southern California, you can go a long, long time without wearing or needing a coat.
Culturally, it's a strange mix of complete homogeneity (there is a Walmart, Applebees, Dennys, Starbucks in virtually every corner) and regional differences in cuisine, stress, density, etc.
I've traveled all over the US for my job and the homogeneity is winning. I try to seek out what the local culture has to offer but these days, it's hard to find.
Religious habits do vary, but from a work standpoint, never really intrudes. In Washington, where I live, there is a church about every 200 feet, and we're one of the least religious in the country. I'll never forget the first time I was in the deep south (Pensacola) and almost every radio station had some idiot preacher shouting out the fire and brimstone.
Some differences are subtle, others more overt.
