His Friend Wrote:Linux is actually more efficient at running hardware than windows or mac usually (if it's supported). Also Firefox is completely open source, a LOT of people use that, same goes for audacity as an audio editing program. The real reasons that linux isn't used more, isn't because it's rubbish at all, it's simply because people don't know how to use it as it's quite heavily CLI. Oh and Linux can play HD video's and I actually managed to get my iPod touch to sync WIRELESSLY in linux across my home WiFi and I was able to also stream music from my iPod through my pc which was also pretty cool.
I'm quite sure you can't do that with iTunes. Oh and it's practically impossible for your monitor or speakers to be unsupported it would be your graphics and sound cards that wouldn't be supported, and in which case how did you even see what you were doing when you "used linux for numerous times over the years..."? And it's ridiculous even saying how "commercially viable" Linux is... it's free. As a whole it's not a commercial product as it doesn't belong to any individual or body to sell. Certain versions have cropped up over the years that people have tried to sell, but ubuntu, which is the most widely used version for home computing is free. So at the end of the day, no one would buy something that is free and thus the discussion was kind of pointless. (I do agree about commercial applications being better however)
Shiny's Idiot Friend Wrote:Ive used linux enough to determine there's no use or place for it. Im not defending Windows personally i prefer Mac. Yes you can argue linux has its 'small benefits' but what ive experienced and which argued across the industry. Yes i understand its more of a command interface than a GUI but thats exactly the point im trying to say unless it removes that barrier its simply not going to get anywhere, most people dont have the experience and ability to function it.
It can play HD Video yes but not at the highest quality again because of driver support (Nobody really wants to make drivers for linux, there's no point) Yeah but what software did the iPod sync with was it better than the GUI interface and some of the features and functions you have with iTunes, i argue that to be far from the case. These ability's with your iPod are more than likely to be released in the following days by Apple at WWDC, Yes i agree the sound card as well as graphics are down to that being linux is unable to output my HDMI connection, Windows wasnt a problem from bootup and install. When i used linux i basically played around installed things to personally see in where in my opinion it would exceed in something i already use in Windows and personally i couldnt see anything it really exceeded in. Yes you can argue there's some features but i wouldnt say any of them are ground breaking a lot of them very out of date. Commercially i mean its use within the industry within typical everyday businesses. Yeah exactly its free so surley it stands a much greater chance than Microsoft and Apple, yet its far from being a success and incredibly unlikely it ever will be?...... and the reason that cannot sell it, is because its argued many people contribute towards it (Exactly my point about open source projects) which are more a hobby and therefore it wouldn't be right to sell something made by everyone, its just a mess in terms of a project bits and bobs everywhere people working on different ideas functions and so on, there's no chance of a business model unless someone totally reinvents it.
Yeah im not backing up Windows i far from Love windows i notice and i can understand its faults but at a personal level and quite a large industry known level i dont see any place or any use for Linux i most things i can do on my PC or even a mac, that is better or ground breaking, and as a customer most people would trust something paid against something free. Its like saying if someone offered you a free slap up meal and someone was offering about £30, who do you trust? and its very much like that commercially and with us consumers, its an ideology of trust and if something free doesnt mean people are going to choose it. Which clearly has been the case with linux its not really got anywhere both with consumers eg you and me and the industry eg software developers and so on.....
Thats my opinion and i know as fact its shared across the industry. If linux is so good, why isnt everyone using it, thats the question, oh and its free? whilst Windows can be in its hundreds of pounds followed by its premium cousin Mac in its thousands. Open Source software is very much a hobby not business and not reality.
One thing i can probably see is if linux gets its act together very much what they have succeeded with its servers and creates a whole new OS based on tablet and smartphone devices in which has a business structure and model, not so open-sourced to a full extent. I believe it has the chance of becoming a success. But as Desktop Computers go, linux clearly hasnt had its day.
