As an American, I can only agree that some of us are.
...or shall we start stereotyping your country, as well?
If that is directed at me hold on your horses - I wasn't stereotyping anyone, in fact I tend to be the one defending Americans when some people come up with the American stereotype of 'fat, stupid, ignorant and the cause of all evil and stupidity' - I doubt all Americans believe in creationism - My critic was directed towards your laws allowing people to NOT hire someone based on sexual orientation and religious beliefs - I will be the first to criticize the portuguese law or European laws in general, but in Europe constitutions usually say None shall be discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, etc. and that's it, no one can refuse to hire someone based on those factors - It doesn't mean people don't do it, but not so openly as it is happening on this situation described in the thread.
I think employers should have the liberty to discriminate based on certain rules they are free to make up, but not so far as allowing them to not hire someone because they are black, gay, or an atheist. In fact if I was, let's say, a Jew and someone hired me, they are forced by law to allow me to not work on Saturdays.
