That's why I prefer the diminutive "Steve" over the formal "Steven". Especially if someone's shouting it to me; it makes me think automatically that I'm being told off for something.
Also there's the question of spelling. When giving the unabridged version to someone, I'm forever having to add the qualifier "with a v", to clarify from the more correct English "Stephen". Going by "Steve" eliminates that.
