When a star is first formed it uses nuclear fusion to turn the hydrogen into helium. When the hydrogen is all used up it starts on the helium turning this into Lithium and so on, all the way to Iron.
Iron is the last element that can be formed in this way. After Iron the whole nuclear process stops and the star explodes in a super nova. The immense pressure wave of this explosion creates all the subsequent elements in the periodic table.
