Mm, let's see; I am an atheist, a socialist, anti-war, pro-environment, reject consumerism as a viable social / economic construct, regard nation / states as illusions that do more harm than good in the world, consider the Constitution a pretty good effort for its time in history but in drastic need of revision to be relevant in today's world, and suspect most multi-national corporations are basically sophisticated criminal organizations whose Officers should be spending time in jail. I regard the Senate as one of the most undemocratic institutions ever devised, consider "states rights" as a place to hide racism, misogyny, cronyism and corruption, and think the office of a President / Commander in Chief needs to be completely revamped - too much power concentrated in one individual.
Just who am I going to vote for? And as for running for office, I couldn't get elected as a dog catcher anywhere in the US. Most likely even AS a dog catcher, I would be assassinated by some wacko Christian Fundamentalists dog lover who thought I was a servant of the Anti-Christ.
No thanks. I did my part for nearly six decades, paid my share of taxes, held my nose and voted for the lesser of major evils, talked with Senators and Governors (nothing official, but ran across several of them in my line of work) wrote letters to various office holders, even attended a protest or two. I am an ex-pat for part of each year now, live in a place where the people don't carry guns, are serious about their religion but don't mind those who aren't, who live in a beautiful place and try to take care of it, and who - in spite of their religion - cherish education and personal rights.
Vote, run for office if you like, I might even admire you for doing so. But this nation is far past fixing, way too ill to recover.
