Speaking only for myself, I honestly can't recall a time when I believed the doctrines that we were exposed to during Mass. It all seemed rather shabby and contrived.
I think the closest I ever came to trying actually put a Catholic dogma to work was when I tried to convince one of my brothers to kill himself so I wouldn't feel bad for stealing apples from a neighbouring orchard. I was six and he was eleven, and all I got for my trouble was a belt round the earhole and ratted out to my parents.
