I appreciate the OP. I find it completely relevant to this forum, and am happy it was posted (although I'm not happy it happened).
In response to 'What's next Sunday's church service going to be like?', I'm pretty sure it will be just the right amount of bereavement. Christians are good at bereavement. Opportunities to make long lasting impacts, flourish in the wake of emotional stress. I predict that the mother will find herself in a retelling of The Scarlet Letter, eventually-- only people don't openly say they're discriminating against her, they just do it. Its an inevitable conclusion--and a reality for many people-- that when bad things happen, the recipient is deemed responsible or even deserving of such events, in many religions. Which is the inevitable conclusion of when you throw in absolutes such as an antithesis to good and god-- which is bad, and the devil. A highly limited frame of thinking, I'm my opinion.
Only the Sith deal in absolutes.
Also, Shaman, love you dude but Beccs is right.

If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.
I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.
