Actually the caste system, "sati daha" e.t.c are later additions (after Manu came into the picture), in "sanatan dharma", your "karma" or actions determine how long you stay in each phase of the cycle of "sukha"(happiness) or "dukha"(suffering), which may continue on to your next life from your previous life (a good way to evade when you can't explain someones suffering despite their actions). The closest thing to the caste thing was being born as animals or other things, but those weren't determined by karma either.
Hinduism is pretty slippery and hard to pin down, because there is just too much text and it gives complete freedom to cherry-pick as well.
