They stupidly think "secular" means "godless". The word "secular" merely means "neutral". "Sectarian" is what Saudi Arabia is. "Sectarian" is what Iran is. And even on issues of political party "sectarian" is what North Korea is.
"Sect" means "section", a particular part of society. "Secular" means not playing favorites to a particular section of a population.
Believers can be secular as well as atheists. The founders were secular not sectarian. They understood on issues of politics and religion that no one was entitled to monopoly of power. There was no social pecking order where one group was favored more by the government than another.
