I've got pretty mixed feelings about it. I'm against the death penalty generally, and make two exceptions: murder for hire and child abuse or molestation resulting in the death of the victim. The latter, obviously, is applicable here.
I freely admit that my position isn't rational; I am against the death penalty precisely because I know that it is unfairly sought and applied, it results in the death of innocent people, and that the blood of those innocents is on all our hands. But when I read stories like the one in the OP, my emotions get the best of me.
So those of you who want to take a crack at me for an inconsistent stand, you won't see me arguing. I'm coming around to cognitive harmony on the issue, but it's taking a long time to deprogram myself from the old thought patterns I've held for decades.
