Well actually say just that... however, that approach just begs a row and a slanging match doesn't it?

Surely "give respect to others' opinions" should be first? rather than "be as rude and insulting as you like"?

Look at the top of the forum. See where it says, "Happy 6th Birthday Atheist Forums"? I think we've done just fine for awhile now. If you don't like the way the forum is run, don't read it. Hasn't that basically been your advice to everyone else?

There's a difference between being rude, and throwing the occasional insult to downright flaming.

While everyone expects a certain amount of respect, it's inevitable that ideas and personalities clash. Rudeness should be expected occasionally, insults even. This isn't license for people to act like cunts all the time sure, that's why we have the flaming and trolling rules, but generally if you say something another person doesn't like, and they insult you for it, we're probably not gonna intervene unless it turns into a pissing match. If we intervened every time someone got called a rude word, we'd need about 10 times as many moderators.

I agree totally... until I get people being rude at me, and I'm not rude back... the site should support me not the rude person! Shouldn't it?

rexbecarx... I realise I'm heading for the bin... we've already had a run in... etc...

But please if you can be bothered, lay out the charges... like I said, I've had members telling my I'm stupid, without a response from me, and yet I'm in the dock... why?

Actually this is probably one of the best statements I've seen on a forum... totally realistic. Great to know that calling someone a cunt is fine, and lets' get over it.... kinda sums up how things should be.. people "manning up" and getting on with it.. thanks

Dude. Seriously. Get over it. At this point, you're coming veeeeery close to breaking the rules because you're disrupting the forum by not discussing the topic at hand. This is a thread about the Death Penalty. Discuss that and quit with the butthurt.

RE: The death penalty ..
I've got pretty mixed feelings about it. I'm against the death penalty generally, and make two exceptions: murder for hire and child abuse or molestation resulting in the death of the victim. The latter, obviously, is applicable here.

I freely admit that my position isn't rational; I am against the death penalty precisely because I know that it is unfairly sought and applied, it results in the death of innocent people, and that the blood of those innocents is on all our hands. But when I read stories like the one in the OP, my emotions get the best of me.

So those of you who want to take a crack at me for an inconsistent stand, you won't see me arguing. I'm coming around to cognitive harmony on the issue, but it's taking a long time to deprogram myself from the old thought patterns I've held for decades.

DP is the one thing that once done - cannot be undone. I would be opposed to it on ideological grounds even if we were perfect with our convictions. Since we are demonstrably not perfect in our convictions (and have, in fact, executed men that had been thoroughly exonerated by evidence...after having been presented with this evidence - and excusing ourselves with "well, a jury of his peers convicted him") I don't need to invoke those ideological grounds. The dp fails to deliver and fails to live up to our expectations of the justice system.

Now, as to my ideological opposition. Howsabout we leave state sanctioned killing on the battlefield?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I hear you.

That's why I said in my previous post, that I probably wouldn't have any problem killing someone, who hurt my loved ones.

But that's just our emotions. The law should be entirely stripped of emotions and simply stick to the task of protecting society. Which can be just as easily done by locking offenders away.
