It really must be noted that unfortunately both sides of this conflict are doing what humans evolutionary wise do.
You get attacked, you respond to that by seeking protection from the group you are used to protecting you. In turn you are going to seek powers that are going to stand up for you. This is where the cop out "politics" is used to avoid the core cause of religion.
Lets look at human behavior without religion for a second. Any parent with more than one kid can tell you that those kids compete for attention. Live in a big enough neighborhood with many kids, you also know that a parent can falsely stick up for their kid even if the kid is wrong. That is just kids.
Now, violence in any situation, such as being beaten up, or raped, or seeing it on the battle field can cause PTSD. And even without directly being physically harmed, the threat of harm can also be traumatizing.
Now, back to this conflict. What causes fear in Israelis is the same thing that causes fear in Palestinians. The trauma of physical violence and the emotional trauma of fear of violence. Now having said that, any human is going to circle the wagons around the power they think will protect them the best. This is literally evolution at work.
The evidence that it is about religion is abundantly clear, and without accepting it as the cause, both sides will see the other as a sub species instead of the same species. When a Palestinian Muslim is killed, or they watch a kid killed what do we see constantly from the survivors traumatized by that violence? We see them pray to Allah and turn to religious based power. When the two teens went into the Synagogue and murdered the 4 Jews, what did we see? We saw them react in prayer to Yahweh, and turn to a power structure that holds the same religious beliefs they do. Again, if you as a human get attacked, you are going to look for protection from like minded people and the strongest like minded people.
This will not be solved until religion is taken away as an excuse for either side. It is a club mentality just like a street gang only with weapons and a bigger political structure. But the trauma of violence or threats of violence in our species reaction to such, has never changed. This has to be accepted in order to solve problems.
