Exactly but of two different breeds they really need each other to survive.

Without pseudo-centrists like Heywood running the "both sides do it" narrative, the GOP would have nowhere to hide.

And of course, without the base, hardcore conservatives like ATheist, there would be no GOP at all.

If the GOP suddenly and magically disappeared, the Democrat party would quickly break up into a least two distinct parties. Without the GOP there would be no Democrat party. The Democrats need the GOP to survive.
