I'm curious to know why some people think that scarcity of resources/overpopulation on Earth would be the spur that would finally cause our species to band together for an interplanetary colonization project when slaughter, conquest, and the appropriation of others' resources would be (1) cheaper and (2) more in keeping with our often ignoble history. I forget who mentioned it, but I agree that this sort of project would only come about in earnest in the face of an outside threat that we couldn't ignore, e.g., looming alien invasion, the mother of all comets, etc.
