Yes it wasn't the smartest thing they could have done, but I'm with Chas here. The letters are cutouts which were laid on top of the ground, and I'm not seeing this most visible of all lines they damaged. Did they erase it completely?

Even after reading the CNN article, I assumed that placing the letters meant that they painted them which seems amazingly disrespectful. I am glad to learn that they placed cutouts on the site. Still a stupid thing to do but hopefully, they can rectify the damage.
