Except, when southerners were forced to free their slaves after they started a war out of fear of having to free their slaves, those former slaves survived, even with the racists of the south going out of their way to make their lives miserable and marginal, they survived.
You can't argue that the "current societal model" will harm former slaves. That argument is fundamentally wrong because the abolition of slavery, by itself, radically transforms the "current societal model".
Your argument is the same used by people who justify the idea of "job creators" paying people as little as they can possibly get away with. Without these jobs that don't pay enough to live on, you won't have anything at all. Whether or not you intend to sound like you approve of and encourage the practice of slavery, defending the practice is promotion of the practice.
