Truth is the words gay, homosexual, faggot, pussy (meaning a vagina), cocksucker and others are still thrown out randomly between males as a form of insult, and strong expressions like you are a fucking moron are not as offensive as the ones I previously referenced - When I was a pre-teen/teen I was called gay and other related/synonymous insults to make me feel bad about myself, and I thought it was a bad thing to be (obviously). Luckily I've grown to know there's nothing wrong with being gay, or enjoying anal sex (for males), or sucking penises... It's not that all gay jokes are bad, some are funny, but using words related to homosexuality as a form of insult mostly (and almost always between males) propagates a subconscious mentality that being gay is an exception or an abnormality and that a real man must be an alpha manly male without homosexual tendencies or any kind of behaviour whatsoever associated with females - Such as being able to give your own personal opinion when you go to a clothes shop and not being a douche about it without it being considered a girly thing. Or being able to care about what you dress, how you groom yourself and speaking openly about it without being embarrassed that it will make you feel less of a man

Oh and this mentality also propagates the idea that homosexuality can be propagated like a disease and spread between people, which is harmful for gays and lesbians fighting for equal rights.
