Assuming the non-supernatural parts of the origin of the Qu'ran are accurate, which is doubtful, there's no particular reason to think Mohammed was ignorant of the knowledge of his day. He's supposed to have talked to a lot of people, he could easily have learned a great deal.
He also was supposed to be a merchant. So illiteracy seems to be a little far fetched. A merchant has to at least know what he's selling and have some kind of book keeping. The illiteracy part is probably just made up to make his scribbling more believable.
