What we call civilised in the west is good moral teaching. Listening to judges debate justice the only reason we don't chop off hands and have capital punishment is because we take the examples of turning the other cheek, there being good in everyone and the promise of eternal judgment into account. Bull! Our species has survived long since we discovered the truth about the shape of our planet. Our species has survived without believing in the Egyptian sun god.
The only argument anyone of us can make is protecting human rights from a government standpoint. The right to make stupid claims and the right to blaspheme and ridicule those stupid claims. But that does not make any polytheistic god or monotheistic god real merely because of that right.
If our species never questioned social norms our species never would have left the caves.
Religion does not make humans civil, our common empathy does.
