Is it worth burning any and all social ties, in order to maintain a consistent reminder to people that they can wake up now, while we still have a few traces of our democratic tools left in this country (they removed a lot of them last month)? Is it worth being hated, in order to prime peoples' minds with an explanation of what's about to come down on our heads? Of course it is.
I return again to Moshe the Beadle from Eli Weisel's Night. Everyone in that village who mocked, ignored, and pitied him for his stories about the Holocaust having begun, wound up in Auschwitz. After getting a good laugh and relegating Moshe to ward status.
