Forgot about Jonathan Franzen. Freedom and The Corrections were excellent examples of contemporary fiction.
I used to have a genre fiction guilty pleasure in Dean Koontz. I haven't read his books in a while, though. When he abandoned the Christopher Snow series for a litany of unnecessary Odd Thomas sequels, I gave up on him.
